RoadView 360º System installed on data collection vehicle
The RoadView 360º image system captures unobstructed panoramic views of
intersections and railroad crossings from a moving vehicle at manually
triggered positions. The high-resolution camera and special mirrored lens
retract in and out of the vehicle sunroof using a pneumatic mounting device.
The images provide precise photo-documentation of all roadway features in all
directions at the point of travel, including the right-of-way, overhead signs,
and infrastructure. The single-frame images can be viewed interactively with
Apple's Quicktime VR Player, or can be flattened into JPG format. Each image
is tagged with a user-defined naming convention based on highway index
information, such as highway system, highway number, linear distance,
county name, survey date, direction, and GPS coordinates when GPS is installed.
Data collection is safe and efficient because there is no need for the
vehicle operators to get out of the vehicle and there is no need to close
roads.
The 360º images provide a high-resolution view of the area within the dotted line of the diagram above.
