pavement systems

     data collection vehicle

Mandli’s data collection systems are modular in nature and do not rely on a specific make or model of vehicle. Mandli can mount pavement imaging systems, road surface profilers, transverse profilers, GPS and DMI on any model full-sized vehicle.

Digital Imaging of the Pavement Surface
Mandli's downward digital images are captured continuously using INO LRIS line scan camera technology. Line scan technology allows for a seamless collection of pavement imaging. The speed of the line scan camera will assure complete coverage of the lane of travel without gaps and seams in the images. The images will then be segmented to correspond with the right-of-way image interval chosen by the users. The cameras are sealed within a weatherproofed case for protection from the environment and from theft.

System will include the following specifications:

  • Capable of identifying 1 mm (0.04 inch) cracks
  • Resolution: 4096 pixels across the pavement
  • Full lane coverage (4 meters or 13.5 feet)
  • Max Speed:  62 mph
  • Operating temperatures of +32ºF to 104ºF and storage temperatures of –22ºF to 120ºF

Road Surface Profiler (RSP)
The Road Surface Profiler (RSP) is capable of real-time continuous highway speed measurements of longitudinal profile elevations, International Roughness Index (IRI), Slab Faulting, and Texture. The RSP’s longitudinal profile measurement is based on the “South Dakota” method. The system allows the operator to view real-time profile data in both wheel paths in a graphical display allowing for verification of data collection.

System will include the following specifications:

  • System ambient operational temperature range: 0º C to + 40º (+32º F to +105º F)
  • Two laser sensors are transversely adjustable to any width of 1.50m to 2.00m (60” to 79”)
  • Vertical displacement measuring resolution of the laser sensors: 0.05mm (+/- 2 mil)
  • System collection speed: 22 to 110 km/h (15 mph to 70 mph)
  • Texture wavelengths: Min: 0.2 inch to Max: 2 inch

Laser Rut Measurement System (LRMS)
To detect and characterize pavement rutting Mandli uses an INO Laser Rut Measurement System (LRMS). The integrated 3D laser rut measurement transverse profiler will collect at highway speeds and provide full lane coverage. The system will provide immediate and precise detection and characterization of rutting conditions.

System will include the following specifications:

  • Sampling rate: up to 30 profiles/sec
  • 5 meter width profiles possible
  • Transversal (width) resolution: 1280 points/profile
  • Depth resolution: ±0.05/ Depth accuracy: ±0.1 mm/ Depth range of Operation: 500 mm
  • Transverse Accuracy: ± 3mm
  • Operating temperatures of +23ºF to 110ºF and storage temperatures of –22ºF to 120ºF

Distance Measurement Instrument (DMI)
The Mandli system features a non-contact DMI. Non-contact DMI’s eliminate any errors due to tire slippage (common on gravel roads) and varying tire inflation. Since the unit does not make contact with road surfaces and have no moving parts, the unit will resist damage and wear in even the most punishing environments.

System will include the following specifications:

  • DMI is accurate at up to speeds of 65 mph without affecting data integrity.
  • Speed Range: 0.31 mph to 155 mph (0.5 kmph to 250 kmph)
  • Measurement deviation: less than +/- 0.1 %

Real-time Differential GPS
The Position Orientation System (POS) system in Mandli’s data collection system collects vehicle position, velocity, attitude, track, speed, and dynamics from a moving vehicle. This data can be used to create centerline maps and to calculate geometric data such as curvature, grade, and cross-slope. The POS also provides motion compensation information to other sensor systems onboard the data collection vehicle. The system incorporates the Applanix POS LV unit and includes an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) with real-time differential.
