Safe rail operation during low light and night-time conditions
requires that directional, regulatory, and cautionary information be
displayed upon control devices and be clearly visible to the
rail operator. Manual inspection of rail signs and markers makes
regular maintenance time-consuming and expensive. Mandli Communications
and Facet Technology Corporation have teamed up to develop an automated
system that provides a safe, cost-effective alternative.
As an add-on component of Mandli's rail data collection system,
accurate reflectivity data can now be collected from a customized
vehicle installed on hi-rail, or from a system installed on a rail car.
Luminance values are determined
on-the-fly using an active infrared light sensor triggered at periodic
intervals along a route along with a high-intensity black and white
digital image intensity frame.
