*Director of Technology

Summary of the Position

The Director of Technology is responsible for directing and leading the Software Development and Engineering Teams in their mission to provide best-in-industry products to the organization and its customers. This position is a technological leader in the organization and an important voice in the development and implementation of the organization’s overall business strategy. This position also collaborates with the Software Development and Engineering Team Leads in process development, budget creation, intellectual property protection, resource scheduling, and personnel management. Knowledge of product development processes and IT operations is necessary for the individual in this position.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Direct and lead the development of industry-best software and hardware products
    • Develop, implement and maintain procedures
    • Utilize a document control system to establish a living library of process documents that are reviewed and updated as necessary
    • Collaborate with the Quality Team to establish quality system policies consistent with industry standards
  • Contribute to the development of high-quality products and services by assisting the Product Team with setting performance requirements and by ensuring the end products meet the documented specifications, product requirements and organizational goals
  • Lead strategic vendor relationships and act as the primary point of contact
  • Provide consultation and expert advice to company leadership on all technology-related topics
  • Actively participate in the creation of company strategy
  • Perform goal creation for the Engineering and Software Development Teams that align with the company’s business objectives
  • Collaborate with Product Team, General Counsel, and other company personnel in the identification and protection of company-generated intellectual property
  • Perform budget creation and maintenance for Software Development and Engineering Teams
  • Assist Engineering and Software Development Team Leads in overseeing day-to-day management of their respective teams
    • Assist with personnel matters including hiring, employee discipline, and terminations
    • Assist with labor and non-labor resource scheduling and allocations
  • Conduct periodic reviews of the product development process with senior leadership
  • Establish KPIs to track and communicate the progress of strategic initiatives
  • Drive any necessary culture change and improvement in business practices to comply with the product development system
  • Serve as an outward-facing company resource
    • Represent the company at industry events and conferences
    • Develop relationships with customers and potential customers
    • Track industry developments and competitors’ offerings
  • Maintain knowledge on engineering and software development principles and regulations
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, or related field
  • 5+ years experience managing software development and/or engineering teams
  • 2+ years experience overseeing a product development process
  • Experience with MacOS and Linux

Preferred:

  • Masters degree in engineering, computer science, or related field
  • Creative thinker and problem solver
  • Knowledge and experience in IT operations

Travel

This position requires up to 15% travel throughout the United States and Canada. Other international travel may be required on a limited basis.

Vision requirements include the ability to have clear vision at 20 inches or less to view and effectively utilize general office equipment and computers. In addition the employee is occasionally required to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. And, work outdoors for testing and set-up of data collection vehicles, cameras and other equipment is sometimes necessary.
