Visualization: Anaheim Stadium Project

In April of 2010 a multi-national visual effects company contacted Mandli in need of an organization that could create a three-dimensional digital model of Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California. The model needed to be completed in a short amount of time and with highly accurate dimensions. Mandli utilized our vehicle-based collection system to collect LIDAR and imaging data of the the stadium on location.

Once the data was collected we imported it into Autodesk Maya, a popular three-dimensional modeling program used in the visual effects industry. Using Maya, a polygon mesh model was created of the stadium based off of the LIDAR and imaging data. It took us less than two weeks to collect, process, and deliver the final product. Without the speed and efficiency of our mobile collection system we would not have been able to complete this project within the timeframe and budget required.

Practical Modeling

The LiDAR system is an excellent tool for providing accurate models of urban areas. These models can be used to plan improvements, inventory assets, and evaluate civil concerns. Mandli provides a realistic representation of urban environments that is easy to collect, three-dimensional, fully interactive, and easy to update. All buildings, objects, and roadway assets that are viewable from the street can be clearly seen in the post-processing software. These objects can be extracted and inventoried to maintain an easy-to-use and accessible database of assets. Mandli can also provide a fully rendered polygon mesh model of the target area for advanced visualization uses.

Transportation Network Modeling

In the past, manual surveying was required to create transportation network models. The process was very time-consuming, requiring roadway lane closures and traffic rerouting, and numerous personnel to perform the physical surveying. Mandli’s LiDAR system is a fast, cost-effective and safe alternative for creating transportation network models. The system is able to collect data at highway speeds, negating the need for costly lane closures that could endanger motorists and surveyors. The data is also accurate, and easy to view and measure in Mandli’s post-processing software. A fully rendered polygon mesh model can also be created of the entire network. The model and data can be used to evaluate safety concerns, plan new developments and remodeling, and evaluate the grade and cross-slope of the roadway to ensure that it meets design standards.
